In the midst of the Indian capital’s housing crisis, a local business is doing what it can to revive the city’s home décor scene.
Macys Home Decor has launched a specialised store that has become a hub for local professionals in the city.
In an effort to bring home the art of home decor to the city, the company has launched an exhibition at the Pune-based BHG exhibition space, in partnership with Mumbai-based designers and artists.
“The aim of this exhibition is to promote the beauty of living in a modern home,” said Amit Suresh, a managing director at Macys.
“We are not just here to sell furniture and other products but also to educate people about the importance of keeping the house in the present and the way it looks.”
Macys Home decor sells over 20,000 items a day and employs over 100 staff in its four outlets.
Its customers include professionals, designers and others in the fashion, home design, design-led and creative industries.
The exhibition is part of a broader initiative called the Macys Community Showcase, in which Macys aims to attract and develop talented professionals across all fields to contribute to the overall wellness of the city through its initiatives.
The showcase will feature a range of products ranging from handcrafted wooden chairs to the latest trends, which will also feature in the brand’s curated stores.
Macy Home decor, founded in 2015, is one of the first home decor stores to have a dedicated website, and its sales have grown from around 10,000 to more than 50,000 in just a few months.
The company is also the first in the country to sell a range for the home-improvement market.
“Our customers can browse the various items in our shop and then decide what they want to purchase,” said Sureshr.
The display is being held in Mumbai’s Moti Nagar area. “
People have come from all over India and beyond to purchase Macys products,” he added.

“When we opened our first store, we had to make a number of decisions,” said Arvind Kumar, managing director of Macys in-charge of the Mumbai area.
The company started as a one-store operation in the old city, but expanded to five stores in Mumbai and one in Pune. “
It has given us a big boost in the local retail sector.”

“Every day we are expanding our store,” Kumar said.
The company has also been working with the MCA, which owns a significant number of the buildings in the area, to develop a programme of initiatives for young designers.
“Young designers who want to open a shop should be given a chance to do so,” said Varshan Gupta, co-founder and managing director, Macys India.
“They can showcase their skills to the young professionals who come to visit our stores.”
Gupta also said that Macys will work to expand the brand in the cities of Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad.
“These three cities have been the main cities of Macy for some time.
The idea of the Macy India showcase is to encourage people to visit the brands’ stores in these three cities,” he explained.
