“We were the most successful sellers,” said Mark Givens, who was named the 2014-15 winner of the National Magazine Award for Design for the home decor store he opened in downtown Minneapolis.
Givans, whose store sold over 40,000 products and helped transform his hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota, into a global fashion hub, said he was inspired by the store’s success and how it helped him make his dream of opening a boutique in Manhattan a reality.
“It’s an opportunity that was just not available to me before,” he said.
“I didn’t know if I wanted to open a boutique here in Minnesota.

GIVENS: He wanted a place where he could hang out with his family, play golf and have some fun.
He decided to go with a simple design.
He’s had a blast with it.
“When I opened the store, it was just the first thing that came to mind,” he added.

In 2014, Givents and his wife, Amy, opened a second store in Minneapolis that sold a selection of hand-crafted gifts.
They have been featured on TV and in the media, with the TV show “Designated Survivor” making an appearance in 2015.
In 2016, they opened a boutique on the second floor of the Minneapolis Convention Center.
“My goal was to open up this store in Manhattan,” Givarts said.
“And it was such a great honor,” he continued.
“To see this amazing community come together and support a store is really gratifying.”
Givens is planning to open his third store in 2018 in a new location in downtown Manhattan.
“This store is so much more than just a home decor retailer,” he told Business Insider.
Every store has a different vibe and I’m going to be putting all of my effort in this store to be the best experience in that space.”
